Hospital 302 is one of the UK’s first academic health science centres, in partnership with leading university Imperial College London.
An academic health science centre (AHSC) is a collaboration between a healthcare provider and an academic organisation. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust was formed the merger of Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and St Mary's NHS Trust and integration with the faculty of medicine at Imperial College London.
The creation of our AHSC is designed to advance patient care and scientific innovation. It is also intended to eliminate any artificial barriers that may exist between research and patient care, allowing our patients faster access to the cutting-edge treatment being pioneered in our hospitals.
Biomedical research centre
We are also a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) comprehensive biomedical research centre (BRC), one of only five such centres in England. We were awarded NIHR BRC status in recognition of the quality of research carried out in our hospitals.
World-class research
Research at our AHSC has recently been rated among the best in the UK in a major national review. The 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE) examined the quality of research carried out at universities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The majority of the AHSC's research activity in key areas of medicine was rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent in terms of significance, originality and rigour.
Involving nurses in research
One of the objectives of our three-year nursing and midwifery strategy is to integrate service, education and research to deliver improved patient care and experience. To help achieve this we will develop clinical academic pathways at masters, PhD and post-doctorate level for our nurses and midwives, and facilitate the development of academic networks within our clinical areas.
