Septic arthritis: Joint inflammation that is caused by bacteria infecting the joint. Diagnosis is made by analysis of fluid that has been removed from the joint, including microscopic examination and culture. Treatment is by antibiotic medication and drainage of infected joint fluid from the joint. Also called bacterial or infectious arthritis, suppurative arthritis, and pyarthrosis.
