Vascular surgery focuses on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the blood vessels.
The service manages patients with:
* Carotid artery disease
* Aneurysmal disease (including thoracic and endovascular treatment)
* Acute and critical ischaemia of the leg
* Diabetic foot disease
* Varicose veins (managed by surgery, endoluminal thermal ablation – laser/radiofrequency – and foam sclerotherapy)
* Venous ulcer disease
* Deep vein occlusion/incompetence
* Pelvic vein congestion syndrome
* Thoracic outlet syndrome
* Hyperhydrosis (including thorascopic sympathectomy)
* Raynaud’s disease
* Tertiary renal access
* Arteriovenous malformations
* Lymphoedema
The department is internationally renowned and is one of the largest carotid practices in the UK. The department has been the lead centre in the trials evaluating the role of endovascular aneurysm repair, management of venous ulceration, varicose veins and the management of lower limb ischaemia. Patients with varicose veins are offered all the latest treatment including radiofrequency ablation, laser and sclerotherapy modalities in the management of their venous disease. Charing Cross Hospital is the first NHS centre to provide a comprehensive varicose vein service based in outpatients under local anaesthetic.
There is a 24 hour consultant-led on-call vascular rota, which is supported by a dedicated vascular middle grade and a consultant vascular interventional radiologist.
Location
The non-invasive vascular laboratory, which incorporates the vascular outpatients department, is on the 4th floor, north wing.
A dedicated local anaesthetic vein treatment centre is located on the 4th floor, north wing.
The dedicated vascular ward is on the 4th floor south wing, which looks after the full range of vascular patients, ranging complex aneurysm repairs to amputees. The ward has full support services including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, speech and language therapists.
