The rheumatology unit at Charing Cross Hospital has a national and international reputation as a centre of excellence for clinical service delivery and translational research that includes an active clinical trials programme. Achievements include the development and introduction of the first biologic therapies for rheumatoid arthritis.
The department offers general and specialist rheumatology services with clinics on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday mornings and Thursdays.
There is a one-stop injection clinic for soft-tissue problems on Monday afternoons. We also see patients urgently if required.
The unit has specialist interests in particular conditions that interface with clinical trials of new therapeutics and research programmes in disease pathogenesis, genetics, diagnostic biomarkers and imaging. These include: rheumatoid and early arthritis, connective tissue diseases, including SLE and Sjogren’s syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome, osteoarthritis of hands, ankylosing spondylitis and gout.
We have a specialist rheumatology nurse who undertakes drug monitoring in close cooperation with primary care.
